Editorial take
LangSmith is the polished control plane if you already pay LangChain tax. Compare it to Langfuse on open vs hosted, not on a vanity dashboard. We do not treat LangChain customer logos as evidence.
Strengths
- Mature tracing and dataset/eval UX.
- Tight LangGraph integration if you use that runtime.
- Team features for prompt/eval collaboration.
Limitations
- Proprietary. Self-host is not the default.
- Gravity well toward the LangChain stack.
- Easy to confuse with LangGraph (we listed both, different jobs).
Compare
- vs langfuse — Open-source LLM observability versus the LangChain control plane.
