Open terminal agent that plans large diffs in a sandbox.
Plandex is an open-source terminal coding agent that emphasizes planning and large, multi-file changes. It keeps a project in a sandbox-like worktree, applies revisions, and is model-agnostic. A hosted cloud version exists alongside the self-hosted CLI.

Editorial take
Plandex is for people who bounced off Aider’s commit style and wanted a plan/revise loop. The MIT CLI is the listing. Hosted Plandex is optional. It still will not give you a team preview URL unless you wrap it.
Strengths
- Planning-first loop for large changes, with a public MIT repo.
- Model-agnostic CLI.
- Worktree/sandbox posture is more explicit than a raw editor agent.
Limitations
- Smaller ecosystem than Aider or Claude Code.
- Hosted vs CLI features differ; do not assume parity.
- Not an observability or verification product.
