Augment

Enterprise coding agent that sells context over huge codebases.
Augment (Augment Code) is a proprietary coding agent and IDE extension aimed at large private repositories. The pitch is context quality and enterprise controls, not a hobby CLI. It competes with Cursor and Copilot in shops that will sit through a security review.

Editorial take
Augment is a sales-led context engine wearing an agent. That can be the right buy in a 20-million-line monorepo and the wrong buy if you needed a headless worker. We do not repeat named-customer slides. Read the data-retention docs before you treat “enterprise” as a sandbox.
Strengths
- Positioned for large private codebases and enterprise SSO/review.
- Agent plus completions, not completions alone.
- Docs emphasize context and permissions rather than only chat.
Limitations
- Closed source, cloud-shaped, procurement-heavy.
- Not a documented self-hosted control plane in materials we checked.
- Unattended factory features are secondary to the IDE pitch.
