Amazon Q Developer
Verified
AWS’s coding assistant and agent, billed into the AWS account.
Amazon Q Developer is AWS’s coding assistant: IDE plugins, a CLI, and agent features that can implement tasks and review code in an AWS-shaped world. It is the path of least resistance for teams whose identity, repos, and CI already live on Amazon.

Editorial take
Q Developer is Copilot for people who already lost the bake-off to AWS. The agent features matter only if they run against your CodeConnections and IAM story, not as a generic IDE. Model independence is not the pitch. We are not repeating AWS customer-count slides as evidence.
Strengths
- Native to IAM, CodeCatalyst/CodeCommit/GitHub-on-AWS, and AWS billing.
- IDE plus CLI coverage for teams that will not add another vendor.
- Agent and review features documented as product surfaces, not a single chat box.
Limitations
- Locked to Amazon’s model stack and account.
- Closed source. No self-hosted Q control plane.
- Outside AWS, it is just another plugin competing with Copilot and Cursor.
Compare
- vs github-copilot — The two incumbent cloud-vendor coding assistants.
